The holidays are a time to celebrate, eat well, and connect with others. If you have diabetes, you can still enjoy your favorite foods — it just takes a little time to plan.

These 5 simple tips can help you feel your best while enjoying the season.

1. Make a simple plan

Think ahead before a big meal or party.

  • Eat regular meals with protein and fiber to help keep you full.
  • If dinner is later, have a light healthy snack first.
  • Bring a healthy dish to share — it helps you and helps others too!
  • If you drink alcohol, skip sweet mixers like soda or juice.

A little planning helps you stay on track and still enjoy the fun.

2. Fill your plate the smart way

At parties or buffets, take a moment to look at all the food before filling your plate.

  • Fill half your plate with vegetables.
  • Add lean protein, like turkey or fish.
  • Choose smaller portions of high-carb foods, like bread or potatoes.
  • Drink water instead of sugary drinks.

Enjoy the foods you love — just take your time and listen to your body.

3. Enjoy your favorites mindfully

You don’t have to skip your favorite holiday foods.

  • Choose one or two special treats that make you happiest.
  • Eat slowly and savor each bite.
  • Remember, you can start with a small portion – and if you want more, you can always get another serving or take leftovers home.

Eating with intention helps you feel satisfied and keeps your blood sugar steady.

4. Keep moving — even a little helps

Balance your meals with movement.

  • Take a short walk after eating.
  • Dance to your favorite songs.
  • Help clean up or play outside with family.

Moving your body helps manage blood sugar and boosts your mood.

5. Focus on what matters most

Healthy living is about balance — not perfection.

  • Enjoy the company of loved ones.
  • Be kind to yourself if you eat more than planned.
  • Get back to your normal routine the next day.

You’re in control, and every small choice adds up to better health.

You've got this!

The holidays are a time for joy — not stress. With a few small steps, you can celebrate, enjoy great food, and feel proud of taking care of your health.
