Support Starts with a Conversation: Understanding Domestic and Sexual Violence

Written by Marathon Health | Oct 13, 2026, 10:00:01 AM

Recent news and public conversations about domestic and sexual violence can bring difficult experiences and emotions to the surface. These conversations also remind us of the importance of compassion, awareness, and knowing where to turn for support.

Domestic violence can include physical, emotional, sexual, or financial abuse, as well as controlling behaviors within a relationship. Sexual violence can occur within or outside relationships. These experiences affect people of all backgrounds, and their impact may not always be visible.

Whether someone is currently experiencing an unsafe relationship, processing a past experience, or supporting a loved one, help is available, and no one should feel they have to navigate these challenges alone.

Seven ways to support yourself or someone else

  1. Start with a conversation. Reach out to someone you trust, whether that’s a friend, family member, or healthcare provider. You don’t need to know exactly what to say to begin.
  2. Listen without judgment. If someone shares a difficult experience, listen, offer reassurance, and avoid pressuring them to share details or make immediate decisions.

  3. Respect personal choices. Everyone’s situation is different. Supporting someone’s decisions and respecting their pace can help restore a sense of confidence and control.

  4. Pay attention to emotional well-being. Changes in mood, sleep, stress, or relationships may indicate that additional support would be helpful.

  5. Focus on safety and well-being. Healthy routines, supportive relationships, and activities that reduce stress can help. If safety is a concern, a trained advocate can help explore options and develop an individualized safety plan.

  6. Offer practical support. Checking in, helping with daily responsibilities, or offering to accompany someone to an appointment can make a meaningful difference.

  7. Connect with professional resources. Medical providers, mental health professionals, and community organizations can offer guidance, emotional support, and connections to specialized services.
