5 Tips for a Healthy Summer

The summer season is upon us, which means warmer weather, longer and brighter days, and more opportunities to get outside.

To make the most of your summer, here are five tips for how to stay active and healthy all summer long.

1. Stay hydrated

Sweating more = losing more fluids. Drink plenty of water throughout the day. Infuse it with lemon, cucumber, or mint if plain water isn’t your jam. Aim for at least 8 cups, more if you're active, working outside, or it's scorching outside.

 2. Fuel your fun

Summer is perfect for fresh fruits, salads, grilled veggies, and lean proteins. Watermelon, berries, cucumbers, and leafy greens are all-stars for hydration. Avoid super heavy, greasy foods that weigh you down in the heat and opt for foods that are light, hydrating, and easy to digest to stay energized and beat the heat.

 3. Don't skip sunscreen

Embrace the sunshine but be sun-savvy! Apply SPF 30 or higher daily—even on cloudy days. Reapply every 2 hours if you're swimming, exercising, or working outside. Your future self will thank you (no sunburn, fewer wrinkles, lower cancer risk).

 4. Protect your sleep schedule

It’s easy to throw off routines when the sun stays out longer. Late summer nights are fun but sticking to a consistent sleep routine, opting for sleep in a cool, dark room, and limiting screen time before bed will help your body recover and stay energized after days working and playing in the sun.

 5. Move smarter, not harder

Take precautions when exercising in the heat. Avoid intense exercises in the midday heat when exercising outdoors and plan workouts for cooler parts of the day, such as early mornings or late evenings. Stay well-hydrated, dress appropriately, and be mindful of your body’s signals when exercising outside.
